WHAT IS IN THE NAME?

The name Tapula is derived from the two names of our beloved parents, grandparents and great grandparents, Tapumanaia and Lasela. The name Tapula was adopted by resolution of the extended family fono in Auckland, New Zealand in early 2008. Since then the extended family became known as Tapula. Besides, the origin of the name Tapula, the word itself has a definitive meaning in the Tuvalu vocabulary. Tapula has multiple meanings in the Tuvalu language: it means target, aim, objective, focal point, purpose, standard, goal or mark. Hence the name Tapula not only has a close affiliation with our grandparents but it also has definite meanings for all Tapula members. These meanings are clearly expressed in our VISION and MISSION statements.

The addition of the word “international” is appropriately added to match the global distribution of members of the family all over the different parts of the world. The dispersion of Tapula members include those living in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, American and Western Samoa, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Republic of Fiji Islands, Solomon Islands, Republic of Nauru, Republic of Kiribati, and Tuvalu.
